sometimes i wonder, do the non-muslims really not know that much about islam or are they just plain ignorant?
for example, #alcohol consumption is definitely a big no-no for muslim {although i hate to admit this, but memang wujud lah orang islam yang kaki botol...}
thus it became a routine for me to check if any type of alcohol is being used during the food preparations when i went to check out any restaurants in london. ok fine *pout* they might not know that fact. but after i informed the ladyboss at ten tei regarding that matter, she came back and said, "alcohol evaporates. after you finish cooking, it won't be there anymore."
and kept on pestering us to order the eel-dish. that contains alcohol. because it's the best! {if cakap sekali dua, oklaaa....ni tak! amagad, it's tiring+disappointing talking to someone that didn't understand the meaning of, "no, i don't take alcohol" in english language.}
what's the point of putting it in the first place, if it were to evaporates and leaves nothing behind? silly, no? -__-"
another example is about #wearing hijab. it seems like they see it as an option- wear it if you want, don't wear it if it's too much hassle, giving your problems in doing your daily life activities.
yesterday we went for the loupes demonstration. ohkay more like lets pura-pura tengok demonstration as they are giving out the new philips electrical toothbrush for FREE to the finalists. woohooo! errrr i mean yeah, what did you say again about the magnification? *hands holding tight to the freebies*
we then approached this guy selling it for gbp1700+. he started off with, "i'm not pretty sure how you can try this with your headscarf because this needs to sit properly on your ears."
i thought he was gonna stop there but na'aaah . he continued saying something like, "ahaaaa! i know the solution. stop wearing them." and he laughed.
ha-ha-ha. not funnyyyyyy!!!!!! pfffffttttttttt :-f
people may see islam as rigid and not flexible. but rules are rules. and whatever has been written in the Quran has to be followed. it is true some muslims don't behave like they should do. but that doesn't mean we are given the option to follow their footsteps.
being abroad may makes it look like it's an "option" or rather an "excuse"- in the sense that, nobody gonna remind you or nag you or check on you- whether you pray, recite the Quran, eat only halal meats etc. you then decide how you want to lead your life, on your own.
alhamdulillah, i am still holding on to my faith.

That's the thing. Islam is part of our life, it's basically our culture and we know it pretty well so somewhere inside our brain we think others would understand as well.
In the West, many non-Muslims don't know much about Islam. They've heard stuff on the media but it's not the same. So in a way it's our job to inform and educate them, and we have to try and be pretty understanding about it.
Think of it as da'wah ;)
heeeeeeeeeeeeeeee i've got to learn more if i wanna start teach others. coz i think i don't know that much also. before coming here, everything has been laid infront of me. spoonfed like that. pegi class agama because my parents sent me to. quite sekolah agama because i don't like going there *laughs*
but yeahhhhhh, can try and educate them more. it's easy when they are the friends. its harder when it's a stranger tho.
huish.. gi demonstration dapat electrical toothbrush foc? wow.
anyhoo. that guy sj nak tease you kot. hehe
yeahhhhhhhhh dpt free :)) well that's the ONLY disadvantage of being a dental student. dpt things needed for a good oral hygiene regime for PERCUMA!!!! hehehehehee.
hmmmmmmmmm mungkin kot. tp takla kelakar sgt tho :P
yea yea. kinda. sometimes when it comes to religion mmg kita akan sensitive sikit. i knw. :)
oh ya i remember he said that.. i also terkejut n terdiam jap .... well don't take it to heart since they don't understand, they're just trying to be funny when its not. that's what i learn.
hmmmm tulah, when it comes to religion, it's a sensitive issue that people should think first before they start making comments about it.
but no lah, not taking it too seriously lah :)) don't worry. heeeeeeeeeeeee!
I can totally feel your frustration in this post and have to say the sales guy was very rude! I'm glad he didn't just try and remove it for you!!! It must be hard integrating into a community that doesn't seem to understand... but you seem to be coping well and seeing the light side of the situation!
Regarding cooking with alcohol by the way, the alcohol content evaporates, but the taste remains hence why people cook with alcohol :)
